So David and I have decided to forgo a live Christmas tree this year to buy Chickens for families in 3rd world countries. Weird I know, but it is amazing how much of an impact it will have on lives. For the family living in poverty in most parts of the world, a rooster and hen are not pets. They are the source of up to 40 dozen eggs a year! When the pair produces chicks, a flock develops that will provide nourishment and income for years. You can order chickens or other animals for families in the 3rd world here: http://www.gfa.org/donation/from-the-stable.

Anyway all of this was to say, this is one way we are participating in Decembers Action Project this month. How are you all giving back this holiday season and into this next year? Be sure to post any links you have so if anyone is interested they can get hooked up with the ways you are giving back.

This is such a great idea. I did this last Christmas through a different organization. It was great to be able to give those gifts instead of some useless present that would maybe be used for a little while and quickly forgotten.

awesome! We got gifts from our family this year that were things sent in our name to helping organizations and it was really great to know that others were helped instead of just getting some unneeded thing for ourselves... It is needed more than ever these days! Keep sharing the LOVE!!!

Asking for a Christmas that made difference for someone else turned out to be unexpectedly difficult - I found more cool things to ask for than I had people to buy them for me :-) It definitely made for a very satisfying Christmas though. One of my favorites was a Remember the Poor t-shirt from The Love Alliance (of course), but I also got the White Innocent Bracelet from Invisible Children, a 3-strand necklace from Paper to Pearls, Punjammies from the International Princess Project, slave free chocolate bars from Chocolove, and a half ring necklace from Maasai Market. It was awesome to hold a gift in my hands that had been made by someone in Uganda or India - but without any exploitation - and know that its purchase helped change someone's life for the better. I'm looking forward to doing it all over again next year! Thank you, David and Lauren, for challenging us to think of others and being an example of selflessness yourselves.

I bought 10 Colorado Blue Spruce trees from the Arbor Day Foundation for my parents. It is a reminder to our whole family that we are stewards of the land we live on and if we are going to cut down trees we should replace them.

this is amazing. i really love this idea. we did something like this not to long ago, but instead of giving livestock, we paid to drill a well in the community.
