April 5, 2010
Spring is in the air. What a perfect month for Earth Day and Arbor Day. Celebrate by joining in our Annual Community Cleanup. Check out this month’s Action Project to find out how.
LAST MONTH - HAPPENINGS
Last
month we focused on our new Love Alliance groups as well as our
existing groups. We are proud to say that we added four new groups in
the month of March. These new groups are in New York, NY; Lake Worth,
FL; Charlotte, NC; and London, Ontario, Canada. We are excited for
these groups and excited for them to make a real difference in their
communities by getting active with The Love Alliance and the social
justice issues we represent. If you would like to join a group in your
area, you can check out a list of our current groups here. If you would like to start a group, you can fill out an application here.
Our
Groups Coordinator Candice Gordon left last month to Haiti to help with
earthquake relief work. Her trip dates were moved around a little but
she left on March 23rd and will get back April 6th.
From the few tidbits we have heard, it looks like her trip is going
great. Check our blog once she gets back to find out more about her
trip and time in Haiti.
Red Eye: NYC officially became a Love Alliance group this month. In March they put
together 100 hygiene kits with encouraging notes for local homeless and
needy. These kits had shampoo, soap, toothpaste, and a toothbrush in
them. The group was able to hand out many of the kits in the Chelsea
area and met some amazing people along the way. The majority of our
humanitarian efforts in the New York City area will now be through this
group. We are excited for the future.
LAST MONTH - ACTION PROJECT
Last
month was both Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day
(3/8). We focused on the women in our communities and showing them
appreciation. Our T.L.A. Wilkes Barre, PA group as well as Red Eye:
NYC got a jumpstart on this project in February and had some great
stories come out of their time with women in local shelters and woman
who were rescued from abusive situations. We also received stories of
people supporting their local pregnancy centers and shelters. If you
would like to share your experience of donating your time, talent and
resources last month simply upload your photo’s, videos or stories here.
THIS MONTH - HAPPENINGS
This
month we are gearing up for our summer tour. In 2009 we attended nine
festivals in the summer alone. Countless T.L.A. groups were formed
from last year’s summer tour. These summer tour dates also allowed us
to distribute over 50,000 educational cards and have countless
discussions with people eager to learn about the needs of the world and
how they can make a difference towards them. We are not sure just how
extensive this summer’s tour will be, but we are hoping to be able to
raise enough funds to make this summer’s tour even better and more
effective than last. If you would like to donate to our summer tour click here.
We also need some form of transportation this summer, and it is looking
like a van is our best touring option. If you or someone you know
would like to donate a van or would like to sell it to our organization
at a discounted rate (tax deductable) email info@thelovealliance.net or call 321-989-0349.
We
are also focusing on the stories of those that are involved with The
Love Alliance this month. We would love to hear how you have been
involved, what Action Projects you have participated in, etc. If you
have pictures or video of you or your group doing any type of Love
Alliance event, we would love to see them. We want to share your story
with others to encourage them and to get more people involved. Email
your updates, pictures and videos to action@thelovealliance.net
April
8th is TOMS Shoes "One Day Without Shoes." This is an event where TOMS
Shoes is asking people to give up wearing shoes for the day, part of
the day or even a few minutes so that you can experience first hand
what it is like to live without shoes. Millions of people must do this
daily. In this act you will also be helping spread awareness about
what an impact a simple pair of shoes can have on a child's life. Many
of those involved with The Love Alliance participated last year and
plan to do so again this year. You can find out more information at: www.onedaywithoutshoes.com There are already almost 1,000 events going on worldwide in support of this movement. With this month being Earth Day and Arbor Day we encourage everyone to head over to the “Remember The Environment” section of our website to learn more about the earth and what we can do to make a positive impact on the environment.
THIS MONTH - ACTION PROJECT
We once again will be remembering the environment for April’s Action Project. This will be our 3rd Annual Community Cleanup. This month we encourage everyone to plan
community clean ups. Grab some used grocery bags and get together with
friends, family and coworkers to pick up trash in your area. No matter
where you look, we guarantee you will be able to find some trash. Past
community cleanups have been done at the beach, parks, neighborhood
streets, highways, etc. Of course we urge you to be extremely careful
if you decide to do a road clean up. Many cities are putting together
their own community cleanups for Earth Day, so there might already be
something bigger going on that you can get involved with. Check out www.earthday.org and www.kab.org to see if anything is going on in your community.
Don't
forget to recycle all of the garbage that you can. We would also
recommend you bring garden or latex gloves (people toss out some pretty
gross stuff). Let's be a part of making our communities and the world
we live in a safer, cleaner and more beautiful place for ourselves and
the generations after us that will be inheriting our mess. Be a part of
not only changing the environment in a positive way, but of also
changing the perceptions of the people around you.

Last year our TLA Melbourne, FL Group visited No Limits Academy, a local school for
physically disabled children ages 6 to 21, and held a Community Cleanup
with them around their school. Watch the video below to see what a
huge difference they were able to make.
