WHAT CAN I DO I’M JUST ONE PERSON?
A percentage of proceeds from every “Remember the Poor” product sold goes to the efforts in ending the immense poverty in the world. Beyond buying merchandise:
- Continue to educate yourself on the issues. Don't let your knowledge of world poverty stop here. Stay up to date on happenings in the world concerning world poverty by frequently checking our World News section and the links on poverty in our Links section.
- Does poverty exist in your community? Find out why, what is life like for the poor in your area?
- Get out there and help the impoverished in your community.
- Volunteer at a soup kitchen or homeless shelter
- Collect canned foods and donate them to a local group.
- Make a bunch of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and hand them out to homeless people in your community.
- Don’t just let your clothes get eaten by moths in your closet, donate the clothes you don’t wear to a clothing drive. Encourage the people in your house and community to do the same. You’ll be surprised how much we have to give even when we can’t give money.
- Volunteer at your local Habitat for Humanity or at a local Habitat for Humanity work site.
- Become a part of the USPS Operation Santa program. Read real letters to Santa from needy kids, and choose the letters that
move you. Then send gifts marked "from Santa," or deliver them yourself
on Christmas and see the smiles.
- Promote poverty issues - Raise awareness in your community or school by speaking out for the world's impoverished. There are so many ways that you can do this:
Ask to speak to your school/class, group, church. Make them aware of the immense poverty in the world. If you need help getting started you can purchase “Remember The Poor” flyer cards in our webstore to get the conversation started.
Hold a world poverty event via The Love Alliance. We all know that not everyone has the ability to give financially to an issue, but maybe you have the ability to give of your time towards world poverty. Get creative in putting together an event towards the relief in ending world poverty. For help in getting an event started email info@thelovealliance.net.
- Some of the poorest of the worlds poor are producing products we use every day. These individuals are not being paid fair amounts for their product, which further perpetuates the issue of poverty in the world. Choose to buy FAIR TRADE products to encourage the major manufacturers to pay producers fairly for their product.
- Choose to sponsor a child living in poverty in the country of Haiti via The Love Alliance through Compassion International. Click here to view children. Currently 54% of the population living in Haiti lives on less than $1 a day. [ref.]
- If you would like to sponsor children in other countries you can do so through Compassion's website.
- Help provide rice for the poor and hungry of the world for Free through Freerice.com. For each answer you get right, they donate 10 grains of rice through the UN World Food Program to help end hunger. To date, over 60 billion grains of rice have been donated.
- Provide meals for the poor and hungry of the world for just 17 cents a meal through Feed My Starving Children.
- Raise and Lend money through a Micro-Finance organization like Kiva.
- Learn more about different non-profits that are working specifically with World Poverty. Visit our links page to view a list of great organizations.
- Demand change by writing and calling your local and national political representatives and telling them your concerns about poverty in the world. (click here to find your representatives)
